KERA, North Texas: Nuclear Waste Moves West
DALLAS, TX (KERA) - The Texas Low-Level Radioactive Waste Commission voted 5-2 approving a plan that greatly expands the number of states allowed to dump at an Andrews County site owned by Dallas-based Waste Control Specialists. Opponents, including Tom Smith with Texas Public Citizen, say Commissioners failed to listen to citizens who rejected the plan.
Smith: It'll open up floodgates of waste from around the country fom 36 states. Most Texans will be exposed to potential traffic risks as this radio active waste goes rumbling through towns and if theres' an accident, highways, neighborhoods and large portions of the city could be damaged.
Chuck Macdonald, with Waste Control Specialists, says Texas already approved the site, so safety's not the issue.
MacDonald: This process here, by allowing importation, you lower the costs for Texas waste generators which means it's more cost affective for citizens living in Texas who have to pay the price of that disposal.
Smith says opponents will sue. MacDonald says the activists will lose in court as they have before.
